Baku ART Weekend, known by the title “Fly to Baku. Art Weekend. Sense the Future NOW,” is a major cultural event. Specifically, it was established with a mission to celebrate both creativity and cultural heritage. The festival is intentionally designed to be a platform where art is easily experienced by everyone.
Indeed, this initiative is viewed as a vital cultural force, enriching the capital’s cultural life. It serves as a call “to listen, to see, to feel, and to imagine.” The project was conceived and initiated by Leyla Aliyeva, Vice-President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and founder of the IDEA Public Union.
Historic Stages for Contemporary Art
The city’s tumultuous past, from its days as a Silk Road port city, through its oil boom, to its Soviet period, provides a powerful backdrop for the modern festival. Therefore, the city’s most iconic locations are used as venues.
The heart of Baku, the Old City (Icherisheher), which contains the Palace of the Shirvanshahs and the Maiden Tower, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is often incorporated into the festival landscape. Through this, a meaningful exchange between Azerbaijan and the global art community is encouraged.
Art Experiences Across the City
Over the course of three days, a vibrant constellation of approximately 40 events is hosted. Exhibitions, immersive performances, concerts, and public art projects are featured. Consequently, the audience is exposed to a wide array of artistic expression.
The opening ceremony often includes major exhibitions, such as “The Triumph of Form,” featuring works by the renowned Colombian sculptor Fernando Botero, and “My Seas, My Oceans,” a joint initiative focusing on ecological responsibility. Thematic Focus on Water and Ecology

For instance, the exhibition ‘Flow State,’ which opened at the Kichik QalArt Gallery in Icherisheher, featured seven Azerbaijani artists whose works were inspired by Baku’s many city fountains. Azerbaijan’s Artists and Water in a Flow State
