Challenging the High-Cost Mobility Market
The Dacia Hipster Concept is a radical take on urban motoring. This tiny, lightweight EV aims to make electric mobility accessible to the masses. Therefore, Dacia is addressing important social issues concerning affordable mobility. The target price is estimated to be around £10,000. Thus, Dacia is challenging the trend of cars being “ever more expensive.”
Hipster Previews a New Era of People’s Cars

The concept was designed to be minimally specified. It serves as a relatable case study for a different automotive future. The chunky cube measures just 3 metres long. However, it is designed to be a “real family solution.” Sales boss Frank Marotte states that the purpose of the concept is to ask fundamental questions about affordable EVs.
Inspired by Icons and Weight Reduction

The design was inspired by iconic vehicles like the original Mini and Japan’s Kei Cars. The car weighs sub-800kg, a significant reduction from the Spring EV. Consequently, this weight saving is achieved by shrinking the car’s footprint and using a right-sized battery. The expected 150km (93 miles) range is deemed sufficient for urban use.
Size, Performance, and Practicality

The Hipster is short but surprisingly spacious. It crams four seats into its flexible interior. For instance, the driving position is set high, similar to the Bigster SUVs. The maximum cargo capacity is 500 litres with the rear seats folded. In addition, the small battery would be good for about 100km or 62 miles. This range is almost three times the typical French daily mileage.
A Simple and Obvious Exterior Design

The exterior stands out for its very simple and robust design. The axles have been pushed to the edges, creating virtually no overhangs. Specifically, painted parts are kept to a minimum. Only three body parts are painted. The chunky 4×4 look and high driving position make it suitable for both cities and the countryside.
Cost-Slashing and Eco-Smart Features

The Hipster adheres to the “Eco-Smart” philosophy, focusing on design-to-cost. Traditional door handles were replaced by simple straps. Moreover, the mesh seats are designed with no need for foam beneath. Body protection is made from Dacia’s patented ‘Starkle,’ which includes recycled plastic. This avoids active safety features that crank up prices.
BYOD and YouClip Native Interior

The car does not have an integrated infotainment screen or speakers. Therefore, connectivity relies on the Bring-Your-Own-Device (BYOD) philosophy. The owner’s smartphone is used as the multimedia display and audio hub. Also, the smartphone acts as the digital key. The car features 11 YouClip accessory mounts throughout the cabin for added flexibility.
The Regulatory Challenge Ahead

The Hipster is currently a concept, not guaranteed for production. It is underpinned by the platform that will power the Twingo EV. Consequently, the final model will eventually transform into a production vehicle. However, its viability depends on the EU creating a new ‘E-car’ category with relaxed safety regulations.
Conclusion
The Dacia Hipster Concept is a bold, realistic blueprint for the future of affordable electric mobility. By prioritizing simplicity and weight reduction, this 3-metre car solves the cost problem while offering genuine four-seat, 500-litre practicality.
