Google Messages to Integrate WhatsApp Video Calls: What You Need to Know

Google is reportedly testing a new feature that allows users to initiate WhatsApp video calls directly from Google Messages. This move aims to streamline communication by reducing the need to switch between different apps. The feature, uncovered in an APK teardown of Google Messages version 20250131, could significantly enhance user convenience and accessibility.

Testing and Functionality

During an APK teardown conducted by Assemble Debug from Android Authority, the feature was successfully activated and tested. The process is simple: if both users have WhatsApp installed and set up, tapping the video call button within Google Messages will automatically launch a WhatsApp video call. If the recipient does not have WhatsApp installed, the call is expected to default to Google Meet instead.

Current Limitations and Future Expansion

At present, this integration appears to be available only for private, one-on-one chats. Reports suggest that Google may expand this feature to group chats in future updates. Currently, Google Messages relies on Google Meet for video calls, requiring both participants to install the app, log into their Google accounts, and use a phone number that supports LTE-based calling. While functional, this system is not always the most efficient, given the popularity of other video-calling apps like WhatsApp.

Potential Rollout and Future Developments

Google has not officially announced when this feature will be rolled out to the public. However, it is expected that the company will introduce it in beta versions first to gather user feedback before a full release. Another uncertainty is whether users will have the option to choose between WhatsApp and Google Meet before making a call.

Beyond video calls, there is also the potential for Google to extend this integration further by supporting internet-based voice calls directly from Google Messages. If implemented, this would further enhance the app’s functionality and provide users with more flexibility in their communication options.

Conclusion

The integration of WhatsApp video calls into Google Messages could mark a significant shift in how users interact within Google’s messaging ecosystem. By reducing the need to switch between apps, Google aims to enhance user convenience and efficiency. While the feature is still in testing, its potential expansion to group chats and voice calls could make Google Messages a more versatile and user-friendly platform for communication.

Stay tuned for further updates as Google continues to refine and expand this exciting new feature!
