The image tools, introduced on Tuesday as part of GPT-4o’s expanded functionalities, allow users to generate, upload, and edit images directly within the ChatGPT interface. Initially, OpenAI had planned for these features to be accessible across all user tiers. However, due to the unexpectedly high volume of usage from paid subscribers, access has been restricted to ChatGPT Pro, Plus, and Teams users—for now.
A Pattern of Scaling Challenges
This is not the first time OpenAI has encountered difficulties in scaling its products. In December, the launch of its Sora video model faced similar setbacks, where the company had to pause signups due to overwhelming demand.
