Good news for electricity consumers across Pakistan! The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has announced a significant reduction in electricity prices under the monthly Fuel Charge Adjustment (FCA). This move comes as a relief for households and businesses struggling with high energy costs.
Details of the FCA Reduction
According to the official notification, the national average FCA has been reduced by Rs. 2.1240 per unit. This brings down the actual fuel cost to Rs. 10.8860 per kWh from the previous reference rate of Rs. 13.0100 per kWh.
For consumers in Karachi, the electricity rates have been reduced by Rs. 3 per unit, whereas consumers in other parts of the country will see a Rs. 2.12 per unit decrease in their electricity bills. NEPRA has issued separate notifications for these adjustments, confirming that the relief will be reflected in March electricity bills.
Who Will Benefit?
This reduction applies to a wide range of consumers, except for the following categories:
- Lifeline consumers
- Protected consumers
- Electric vehicle charging stations (EVCS)
- Prepaid customers
Why the Reduction?
The FCA reduction for K-Electric consumers is based on the December 2024 monthly adjustment, while the reduction for consumers in the rest of the country is applied under the January 2025 adjustment.
This decision follows the federal government’s recent initiative to reintroduce fuel cost adjustment benefits for consumers using up to 300 units and agricultural tube-wells. This move is aimed at alleviating the financial burden on lower and middle-income households and farmers, who were previously affected by the withdrawal of these benefits in June 2015.
NEPRA’s Directives to Power Distribution Companies
NEPRA has directed Ex-WAPDA Distribution Companies (XWDISCOs) to ensure that the new rates are implemented in compliance with court orders. This ensures that consumers receive the full benefit of the reductions without unnecessary delays or complications.
Conclusion
This recent adjustment in fuel charges is a welcome relief for many electricity consumers across Pakistan. As energy prices continue to be a major concern, such reductions provide much-needed financial ease. With the government and NEPRA taking steps to address rising costs, consumers can look forward to more manageable electricity bills in the coming months.
